Encoding Guide for Early Printed Books

The stylesheets listed below are very simple and primitive; they are not intended to do more than illustrate a concept. Each one is designed to take a specific feature of the TEI document and display it using CSS (Cascading Stylesheets) so that it can be viewed in a web browser. CSS can be used to display TEI documents for various purposes, but the formatting in this case is specifically intended to make it easy to spot errors and inconsistencies. These stylesheets are designed to work with encoding that matches the templates we provide, but you should modify them freely to match your own needs: for instance, to add elements not included in our templates, or to change the formatting of the display. All of the stylesheets contain comments to assist you in modifying them.

Please note that you will need to use a modern, standards-based browser in order to view TEI files using these stylesheets. Current browsers (as of 2006) that will handle display correctly include Firefox, Safari, Opera, among others.
