Context

Poetry occurs in different kinds of places in our texts, so before we tag the poem itself we need to be sure that we put any necessary "enclosing tags" around it.

If the poem occurs...

• as one of a collection of poems, enclosing tag is <DIV TYPE="poem">
• in an epigraph, in English, with no attribution, and no textual indication that it is a quote, enclosing tag is <EPIGRAPH>
• in an epigraph, in English, with textual indication that it is a quote, enclosing tags are <EPIGRAPH><QUOTE>
• in an epigraph, in a foreign language, with or without textual indication that it is a quote, enclosing tags are <EPIGRAPH><QUOTE>
• in the middle of a paragraph: most times the enclosing tag will be <QUOTE>, but if it really doesn't seem to be a quote then no special enclosing tags because it is simply a direct child of <P> (note that our DTD allows this, but the vanilla TEI DTD does not).
• between paragraphs in a prose work and no indication it is a quotation, no special enclosing tags (it is a direct child of the <DIV> element)
• between paragraphs in a prose work and some textual indication it is a quotation, enclosing tag is <QUOTE>
