Encoding Instructions (new P5 version)
In instances of errors of spacing or spelling within words, or in the instance of an abbreviation that needs to be expanded, the WWP uses the element choice, inside of which always occurs a pair of elements. In the case of a word with a non-phonetic spelling error, choice will contain both sic and corr. In the case of an abbreviation, choice will contain both abbr and expan. See 076 for more on abbreviations, as well as 142 for more on sic.
Examples
A non-phonetic spelling error:
<choice><sic>tlemper</sic><corr>temper</corr></choice>
A word-length abbreviation:
<choice><abbr>Ob’t.</abbr><expan>Obedient</expan></choice>
A simple brevigraph such as a letter with a macron or superscript:
<choice><abbr>em</abbr><expan>&emacr;</expan></choice>
