Because of the complex and detailed SGML markup that has been put into the WWP texts, it is possible to search for whole texts using metadata attributes. This search, which is more complicated than the other WWP searches, also allows up to 5 boolean components. |

|
For simplicity, the text attribute search consists of five identical search
forms, laid out in columns. The text boxes in each column contain either
values to select from or instructions as to what to fill in. To construct
your search, you may fill in one or more of the rows. If you fill in more
than one row, you have to also select the boolean operator in Column One
which specifies if you want to search for the hits meeting the criteria in
any of the rows ( |
Column Two: This column lists the text attributes you will be searching on. What you select will affect the contents of Column Four. Click on an attribute to select it. [What happens when you type something into the 5th box in the first row, w/ nothing selected in col. 2?]
Column Three: In this column you can select the logical
operator indicating the value of the attribute you have selected. You have
6 choices, but they are not all valid for all attributes. When specifying a
attribute whose value is a text string, such as an author's name or a
title, or when the value of the attribute is one of several words that
you can select in Column Four, you should use only the logical
operators IS and IS Not. When you are
specifying an attribute which has a numeric value, like a date or
number of pages, then you can use all six values. Click on a value to
select it.
Column Four: This column lists the values of the text attribute you have selected. The values change depending on the text attribute. You never have to use the box in Column Four. If you prefer to enter your own value, you may use the text box in Column Five. In some case, the box in Column Four contains instructions that you may only use Column Five. Click on a value to select it.
Column Five: This column is an alternative to Column Four.
You can use either one or the other, but not both at once. Use Column Five
if you prefer to enter your own value, even though a list of values is
provided in Column Four, or use it in case where the instructions in Column
Four ask you to enter data in Column Five. Don't forget that you may use
wild card characters in text strings. The question mark ?
takes the place of one unknown character, and the asterisk *
takes the place of any number of non-blank characters. [Can you use wild
cards in dates? what happens?]
Column One: If you construct a query with more than one
criterion, you have to join them together by selecting either
AND or OR in Column One. [parenthesizing?]. If
nothing is selected in Column One, that row will be ignored. [What happens
if you select a boolean in a row further down, only?] If you select
AND, then your search will return results only when each hit
meets the criteria in all the specified rows. If you select
OR then your search will return results which meet the
criteria specified in any of rows.
